About Bruces Boxes

Bruce Spaulding - Bruces Boxes

Bruce Spaulding (1936 - 2022)

The year was 1999 when Bruce started building small wooden boxes in his retirement, and to much surprise, people all over the world loved them so much that his son, Craig started to help him out in the workshop.

With 30 years’ experience building homes and cabinet making Bruce demonstrated his keen eye for Tasmanian woodcraft, lovingly hand finishing each piece to perfection, all in his Launceston workshop. where a variety of small timber boxes, jewellery boxes and timber boxes are now built.

Whilst Bruce had a modern workshop with all the newer woodworking tools at the end of the day he felt nothing beats the finish of good old fashion “elbow Grease”. In other words, the timber products were all hand finished. This father and son team believed gaining a quality finish is as much about feel as sight.

Bruce knew his timbers and only purchased select grade material sourced in Tasmania for his boxes. The timbers arrived seasoned and ready to be machined to dimension. Bruce always checked the thickness of each board and then invested extra time to colour match each component. Making sure to provide the best combination for each timber box and jewellery box.

Over the years Bruce and Craig built relationships with a small number of well-respected millers and timber merchants in Tasmania and always made sure to source their timber sustainably.

After a long memorable life Bruce passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy that his son Craig has decided to continue in honour of his Dad.

Bruces Boxes are fine, solid, timber products proudly Made in Tasmania. Unlike glossy thin veneers there is no substitute for the feel, smell and look of real solid timber. Full length piano hinges are used for attaching the lids to the box bodies with their own specially designed back rest which gives great stability and strength.

The stone fits perfectly.

Guys, I’m really happy with the boxes that Bruce made for me. I used the one that’s housing my 100 year old Black Arkansas Whetstone today. I’ve attached a photo of how it turned out. Please pass it on to Bruce and his team. They did a really nice job on this. The stone fits perfectly.

I bought one of the Huon Pine Colonial boxes in August as a birthday present for my wife. Her birthday was late September and she was absolutely thrilled with it. It is a real work of art and Bruce and Craig should be commended for their skill and craftsmanship. Do not hesitate to buy one of their fantastic boxes if you are looking for something of real quality. Well done guys !!

Talk about beautifully, hand crafted, Tasmania products. I purchased a special edition Huon Pine box, which features blackwood edging, for my husband’s harmonica collection. The attention to detail is perfect. It’s interior has two levels and is lined in brilliant purple. These guys were a delight to deal with, extremely helpful and pleasant in all our communication. They will my constant go-to for future gifts. I couldn’t be happier. Amanda
