Myrtle is a predominant species in Tasmania's cool temperate rainforests. In wet eucalypt forests, Myrtle grows as an under storey tree, and as a small shrub at higher altitudes when the site is exposed to wind. Achieving its best growth in highly organic soils. Depending on available rainfall and humidity, Myrtle can be fairly fast growing. In optimum growing conditions, it is capable of regenerating continuously and forests can contain Myrtle trees ranging from 1 to 500 years old.
With 30 years' experience building homes and cabinet making, retiree and maker Bruce demonstrates his keen eye for Tasmanian woodcraft lovingly hand finishing each box to perfection, all in his home-based Launceston workshop. Bruce started making his boxes in 1999 after retiring, at first for a friend's small gift shop and then to much surprise found his boxes were being taken all over the world, so much was the demand now his son Craig helps him out in the workshop.
Whilst Bruce & Craig have a modern workshop with all the newer woodworking tools at the end of the day nothing beats the finish of good old fashion 'elbow Grease'. In other words, the timber products they make are all hand finished. Bruce & Craig firmly believe gaining a quality finish is as much about feel as sight. Bruce knows his timbers and only purchases select grade material sustainably sourced in Tasmania for his boxes. The timbers arrive seasoned and ready to be machined to dimension. Bruce thicknesses each board and then invests extra time to colour match each component to provide the best combination for each box.
Over the years Bruce and Craig have built relationships with a small number of well-respected millers and timber merchants in Tasmania and always makes sure to source their timber sustainably. Bruce's Boxes are fine solid timber products. Unlike glossy thin veneers there is no substitute for the feel, smell and look of real solid timber. Full length piano hinges are used for attaching the lids to the box bodies with their own specially designed back rest which gives great stability and strength.
You will love your Tasmanian Myrtle Jewel Box as much as Bruce & Craig loved making it for you.
Due to the nature of wood being an organic grown material the grain and colour of the product you receive may not completely match with the photo shown on this page. The wood grain and colour of this product might be slightly different due to the position of the cut in the timber log.
