With over 30 years' experience building homes and cabinet making, retiree and maker Bruce demonstrates his keen eye for Tasmanian woodcraft lovingly hand finishing each box to perfection, all in his home-based Launceston workshop.
Huon pine is a rain forest timber unique to Tasmania and due to an essential natural oil in the wood it has a unique one-of-a-kind smell which also makes it highly resistant to fungal and insect attack. Huon Pine ranges from almost white in colour to light cream and yellowish with fine and closely spaced annual growth rings, and sometimes small black “birds eye” markings. The Huon Pine used in this product was recovered in a sustainable way from the Tasmanian forest floor under licence by the Tasmanian government and allocated to the company Millers. It is the remnant of the old piners of long ago or natural death of the tree. Blackwood is a native Tasmanian hardwood which appears in a rich variety of colours with a stunning grain that can be straight or wavy. It has a lustrous appearance and is a strong, long lasting timber. It is the perfect partner for Huon Pine.
Bruce started making his boxes in 1999 after retiring, at first for a friend's small gift shop and then to much surprise found his boxes were being taken all over the world, so much was the demand now his son Craig helps him out in the workshop. They only purchases select grade material sourced in Tasmania for the boxes and take time to colour match each component to provide the best combination for each box.
Over the years Bruce and Craig have built relationships with a small number of well-respected millers and timber merchants in Tasmania and always makes sure to source their timber sustainably. Bruce's Boxes are fine solid timber products. Unlike glossy thin veneers there is no substitute for the feel, smell and look of real solid timber. Full length piano hinges are used for attaching the lids to the box bodies with their own specially designed back rest which gives great stability and strength.
Using these two Tasmanian timbers makes this a uniquely Tasmanian gift for your loved one interstate or overseas.
Due to the nature of wood being an organic grown material the grain and colour of the product you receive may not completely match with the photo shown on this page. The wood grain and colour of this product might be slightly different due to the position of the cut in the timber log.
Bruce's Boxes has an extensive quality process they go through before releasing their products for sale. They guarantee to repair or replace any of their products that have been found to have manufacturing defects. Please contact the Tasnique team if you need more information.
