Tony Mitchell

Tony is an artist deeply rooted in his Tasmanian heritage, using his talents to transform salvaged timbers into exquisite pieces of art. Growing up in the lush, natural landscapes of Tasmania, he developed a profound appreciation for the beauty of the environment—a major influence in his creative expression.

At Turnwood Designs, each piece of wood is carefully selected for its unique characteristics.

The timbers used, including blackheart sassafras and tiger myrtle, are known for their intricate figures and rich textures that evolve with age. Tony is particularly fascinated by the way these timbers display their history and natural beauty through their flaws, which he cleverly turns into standout features of his work.

His process involves woodturning, a technique that allows him to delve into the hidden layers of the wood, revealing and preserving the tranquil beauty that lies within. This method not only showcases the deep colors and dynamic patterns of the timber but also allows Tony to infuse his pieces with life—capturing the essence of the tree's own story.

Each artwork is an invitation to explore the serene and natural allure of Tasmania. Tony leaves the timber largely unaltered, exposing its inner body to reflect the raw and untouched splendor of the natural world. Through his creations, he offers a window into the quiet, enduring beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness.

Tony's timeless works are more than just decorative items; they are pieces of history, meant to be cherished for generations to come. Explore Turnwood Designs and find your very own piece of Tasmania's natural elegance.
